Joseph Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross was originally created for Cádiz Cathedral’s Good Friday service in 1786, occupies the Chiaroscuro Quartet’s musical meditation for the week before Easter. Haydn’s work evokes the shattering drama and humbling magnitude of Christ’s crucifixion.
In Haydn’s original, each movement was separated by one of seven short sermons. In this performance, Zeb Soanes reads Andrew Motion’s Sacred Conversations, seven poems written expressly to match the beauty of Haydn’s music.
